Exciting is one word that has almost never been used to describe the design of GPS units. It is obvious that they haven’t invested nearly as much R&D dollars into the design or the intuitiveness of their touchscreens. But times, they are a-changing and the design of the Garmin Nuvi 3790T unit may be ringing in a new generation of GPS design. With the modern new design of the unit, Garmin has also decided to make a few improvements to the touchscreen. The Nuvi 3790T makes use of a new capacitive, high resolution engineering approach which is a departure from the typical resistive variety. It’s a change that isn’t all that surprising in light of the highly competitive nature of GPS technology.
Its new touchscreen using the capacitive glass variety that you can zoom in either direction with a pinching action has really caught our attention. You might notice however that the Nuvi 3790T multi-touch function isn’t quite as advanced as the Android or the iPhone. While the effect might not seem as smooth and seamless, it does not detract from the manner of operation or effect. One slight drawback is the absence of light sensors for adjustments to ambient lighting conditions. However, the high quality of its screen display overcomes that issue very well. When space is a prime consideration, then sometimes you have to make concessions in other areas. We are not at all sure if this was the case with the Nuvi 3790T, but it is always a possibility. Case in point, we have noticed that this unit doesn’t seem to perform as fast as other Garmin GPS units. For example, the signal capture times
does seem a little slower than other units from the company. It is possible that there were other external factors going on. But it was tested in more than one place and more than one time. The route algorithm did seem to favor the primary travel routes and not necessarily the local secondary routes, and that is something to think about. The effect was to add more time since that is often the case when driving by using main roads, only.
TrafficTrends is an improvement in the Nuvi 3790T that offers alternative routes instead of constantly using the main roads. A feature related to that is myTrends which learns the most traveled routes that you take on daily basis and will display it. So you can make a choice of the data source depending on what your needs are at that moment. If you need to use some other routing solution, you can disable the myTrend feature. The Nuvi 3790T by Garmin has shown us what the future of GPS looks like – and it is a pretty one. The one-two knockout punch of a smaller design and a sleeker new interface make this new Garmin a huge hit with users. These are the types of changes that makes Garmin such a leader in the GPS industry.
